We have a match -$ for $ up to $50,000

by The Attic Youth Center

Dear Attic Supporter,

We hope this finds you and your loved ones safe and well during these times of challenge and hope for change.

The Board, staff, and youth of The Attic Youth Center thank you for your generosity and your belief in our work as a safe haven for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.

We’re writing today to invite you to support The Attic and join us in an exciting opportunity to double your impact: if you give by December 31, a generous donor has made a commitment to match all donations dollar for dollar—up to $50,000.

LGBTQ youth need The Attic now more than ever. And, The Attic needs you to continue to be there for them. In a time when schools have gone virtual, it’s harder for young people to find support in their day-to-day lives. Because of pandemic restrictions, LGBTQ youth are now even more isolated and vulnerable than before. Youth whose families are not supportive of their LGBTQ identities feel unsafe and alone.

At The Attic, we could never have imagined that in response to a global pandemic, we’d have to stop gathering in our vibrant, beloved space to offer resources and sit-down hot meals, sharing peals of laughter. But Attic staff have been working tirelessly, reimagining all of our programming virtually, so we can safely remain a vital place of hope and support.

Writing workshops, drop-in chats, science challenges, movie nights, and even a social justice group have all been reborn online. Virtual counseling sessions have become a lifeline for many youth. We’re keeping our vibrant spirit strong and sharing weekly encouragement on a Motivation Message Board. And, we remain open for takeaway hot meals, school supplies, and personal care kits.

The Attic’s virtual Social Justice group has shown leadership by turning collective grief into solidarity and action. The group initially sprang from youth engagement with the Black Lives Matter movement responding to the brutal murder of Trayvon Martin. Now spurred by the ongoing losses of the lives of Ahmaud Arbery, Nina Pop, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Walter Wallace Jr., and so many others, a new generation of youth have joined the movement. They’ve dived headlong into topics like community organizing and using their voices for change.

It is so deeply moving to witness that the challenges and constraints of these times cannot stop the drive to connect and build a community for LGBTQ youth.

Against today’s challenges—and because of your belief in us—the magic of The Attic, Philadelphia’s only independent center for LGBTQ youth, remains protective and transformative.

We’re so grateful to share with you the enclosed “OK2BU” stories of Drea and Jalyn, two members of The Attic family; in their own words, they testify to what an incredible gift of possibility The Attic offers to young people. Jalyn’s fervent hope speaks for so many: “I am counting down the days [to] when I may go back to the Attic in-person, safely and without a pandemic looming over me.”

Maybe you give to The Attic because you had people in your life who affirmed you and created a sense of belonging for you. Or maybe you give because you didn’t. Maybe you hold in your heart the experience of someone you love.

Whatever your story is, we honor it, and we celebrate you. In giving to The Attic this year, you make the powerful choice to light the way for LGBTQ youth. You help create a world where every one of us belongs and can flourish.

Please give as generously as you can to help The Attic reach LGBTQ youth in this critical time and make it to the day when it’s safe to open our doors again. If you give by December 31, the value of your donation will be doubled through a dollar-for-dollar match: a donation of

$50 becomes $100, a donation of $100 becomes $200, and a donation of $500 becomes $1,000.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your donation. Your support lifts up our shared vision of a world where LGBTQ youth are welcome everywhere. We wish you and your loved ones joy, good health, and light in the new year.

In gratitude and hope,
