At Barks of Love the only factor we have when deciding to rescue a dog is if we have a dedicated foster. We don't turn away a dog based on medical needs, size, breed or age. When we bring a new dog into our rescue they stay with our vet for a short stay where they receive all necessary vaccines, a fecal test to test for parasites, full exam and seniors receive a blood panel. Our Medical Coordinator meets with our vet to determine a treatment plan for all dogs if needed.

We currently have four high-medical needs dogs: Leo, Pearl, Keanu and Foxy. We also have bills we are paying for Bruce.

Leo came to us with a collapsed trachea, it was recommended that he receive a tracheal stint but our vet believes we can manage his condition with medicine. He is stable and doing well on his meds! Our initial vet bill was $846. His medicine will be a cost of over $100/month. Leo also is need of a dental and possible mass removal for a benign mass in his mouth. Due to Leo's tracheal collapse this would be high risk.

Foxy was rescued from a local shelter with a large mammary mass and suffering from obesity, arthritis and hip issues. We were able to remove the mass and she has lost over 15 pounds! She has been with our rescue for over a year and unfortunately she has had new tumor growth recently. She is currently staying with our vet so we can observe the masses and determine if she will need additional treatment. Foxy is the sweetest girl and we want to make sure she gets whatever treatment she needs!

Pearl was found as a stray, when her owners were found they surrendered her to rescue and we are lucky to have her! He family loved her so much they knew she deserved better. Pearl is 12 years old and will need to be spayed and is also suffering from an eye infection.

Keanu is a sweet old guy who suffers from spondylosis of the spine. He is in extreme pain every day! He is currently being treated for pain management and is responding very well! Keanu loves going for long walks and hikes and has a lot of energy for his age but has not been able to lately because of the amount of pain he was in. Treating Keanu will give him a new "leash" on life and we can't wait to see him thrive!

Bruce is only 4 months old and he has already suffered so much! He ended up in a high kill shelter with a broken jaw and large abscess on his face. He also contracted Parvo and had to be rushed to the emergency vet. That visit alone was over $1500. His total medical will surpass $2500.
