Friends & Family,

As you might know, I have the honor of serving on the Board of Directors for Bernie’s Book Bank. Bernie’s Book Bank is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing book ownership among under-served children throughout Chicagoland.

Bernie’s Book Bank exists because America is facing a literacy crisis. 61% of low-income homes do not have access to children’s books. Unfortunately, the pandemic has only exacerbated the problem. Books at home are needed more than ever. This is especially true for under-served children, due to the challenges that come with remote learning. Access to reading materials ensures education can continue outside of the traditional classroom. Books can do more than help with learning, they change the story and provide a much-needed escape for those that Bernie’s Book Bank serves.

Every child Bernie’s Book Bank serves receives a bright green bag filled with six free quality books, including books that feature stories in which children can read about someone else’s perspective as well as those that reflect their own cultures and identities. These books are theirs to keep so they can begin to build a personal library.

Children in our own communities urgently need books. I hope you will join me in the fight for equity in education by donating to Bernie’s Book Bank. Every $12 donation provides 12 books for a local under-served child.

Sincerely,

Amit Bir, 2020 Board Member
