Jean Markel graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and then received her second degree, a PHT (Putting Hubby Through) working in dietetics at R & E Hospital in Chicago while Bill was in med school at the University of Illinois Med School. After graduation, they went to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital for his internship and then spent two years at Ft Ord in California.

Having fallen in love with Colorado when they were at Fitz, the Markels decided to return and discovered Broomfield needed another doctor—Broomfield Heights— Population —2700 in 1958. Sounded good to them! Bill founded Broomfield Family Practice which kept them very busy plus raising four wonderful children. They have aged along with the city for sixty years and have never been tempted to go south for the winter.

Jean and Bill lived in town ten years and then moved to the “farm” where they baled hay, raised 4H cattle, boarded horses, and many of our young girls had a drill team and would go the the county fair. What fun they had with those horses. We had a huge vegetable garden and the surplus went to FISH.

The Markels have always taken an active part in the Broomfield Community Foundation, and Bill danced in the very first Dancing With the Stars. Jean never dreamed she would be called up at her age, but said, “how can you say no when a good friend like Jeff Taylor asks you?”. She joked that she’s having second thoughts about him now.

The Markels have always led an active life of skiing, camping, biking, white water rafting, scuba diving, etc.. In retirement, they spent lots of time on cruise ships as Bill worked as the ship’s doctor. It was exciting going to the Antarctic a couple times, the length of the Amazon, around the British Isles, to the Arctic circle, and many other places. Now they love to sit at home and reminisce about all the wonderful adventures they’ve have had in our lifetime.

Jean is anxiously waiting to meet Roberto, her dance partner, who spends his time traveling and teaching dance in other countries.
