COVID-19 is spreading rapidly through jails and prisons in the United States, which is unsurprising given the high concentrations of people and a lack of space, healthcare, and hygiene products. There is already a strong movement to support Black lives across the US; a part of this movement includes changing the way we think about public safety and releasing people from jails/prisons so that they do not suffer or die from COVID-19. To support this vital movement, Calling All Crows, a gender justice organization within the music industry, is partnering with the Multifaith Initiative Ending Mass Incarceration on the Unlocked Voices campaign. The campaign’s goals are to:
- Amplify the stories of people impacted by mass incarceration, shifting the narrative around criminalization in the US in order to mobilize music and faith communities to act;
- Leverage the resources of these communities to acquire and distribute hygiene supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to people in and recently released from prisons in seven US states: New York, Georgia, California, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Texas, and Tennessee;
- Contribute to building the movement to end mass incarceration
100% of funds from this campaign page will go to purchasing hygiene and PPE supplies to distribute to people in prisons and those being released; and to support the system-impacted organizers and artists who make this work possible.
