The pandemic economy has left millions of New Yorkers unable to afford food, forcing many to reduce meal sizes or skip meals entirely, compromising their health at a time when it's never been more important to prioritize healthy habits.
At the same time, farmers across the country, including in upstate New York, have been forced to destroy millions of pounds of food that they could no longer sell due to the closing of restaurants, hotels, and schools.
That's why this year, the mission of Farm to Tray is more important than ever. As the name implies, Farm to Tray raises vital funds that Holy Apostles uses to purchase healthy, locally-sourced food for their two largest meal programs: their daily soup kitchen and their expanded pantry program. Combined, the two programs have provided over half a million meals since January 1, surpassing Holy Apostles' projections for the entirety of 2020 and setting a new record for meals served throughout their 38-year history.
Farm to Tray comes at a critical time. Emergency government funding is set to expire just before the Holidays, despite the increased need, leaving Holy Apostles wondering how they will sustain their expanded pantry.
This year, the virtual event will provide a behind-the-scenes look at how the soup kitchen has adapted to meet an unprecedented increase in need while navigating the challenges posed by social distancing and will also offer entertainment, tips from local culinary partners, and a special cooking demo from Chef Russell Jackson of Reverence in Harlem.
New Yorkers stick together during challenging times and by donating to the virtual Farm to Tray, you are sustaining your neighbors who otherwise would go without. Because Holy Apostles leverages partnerships with culinary figures, they're able to provide a wholesome meal - similar to what you would cook for your own loved ones - for just $1.
Please donate today and you will be automatically registered for Farm to Tray. 100% of proceeds are used to purchase food for the soup kitchen's meal programs.
