As we prepare for a second Trump presidency, the Clean Air Coalition of WNY remains committed to continuing our campaigns for environmental justice, health, and safety. This end-of-year appeal’s theme, Forging Forward Through Uncertainty, encapsulates our steadfastness in holding the line on local and state environmental protections; embodying democratic and grassroots principles; and creating a sustainable future for our communities, nation, and planet.

In 2024, Clean Air’s member-led organizing has:

Reestablished our Membership Team and Events Committee, creating more opportunities for member leadership development and member led initiatives throughout our work
Called to attention the numerous expired Title V Air permits in WNY and throughout the state, leading to widespread press coverage and action by state agencies
Rolled out our Community Air Monitoring Program to empowering folks in disadvantaged communities to collect data on local air quality trends
Organized residents in the Northland Beltline around the large number of junkyards in their neighborhood, facilitating an increase in inspections and initiating clean ups in some facilities.
Pushed for accountability for Battaglia Demolition through the organizing of our Seneca-Babcock campaign, leading the facility's owner to be sentenced to serve time in jail, a rarity for environmental crimes.

As we enter an uncertain future in 2025, Clean Air invites everyone to reflect on the struggles we have already overcome and the wins that we have achieved that once seemed impossible. Fifteen years ago, holding Tonawanda Coke accountable for its blatant disregard for air quality standards and resident health seemed to be an insurmountable task. Now, our Tonawanda team advocating to redevelop the site of the former plant into a renewable energy hub for the neighborhood.

In light of these past wins, we’ve chosen to bring together graphics from our previous campaigns as a reminder of what we can achieve when we work together as a community. Just as birds fly together as the days grow colder and darker, we can continue to forge a sustainable future despite the threats to environmental protection and democracy we face ahead.
