Support for the totally volunteer-supported Rainbow Room, which provides tiny beds, car seats, school supplies, and clothes to foster children and children under the care of Child Services.

Big Spring is an impoverished town with boom and bust times, with the expansion and contraction of oil and gas drilling out on the Texas plains. Families often struggle with uncertain job prospects and an unsure economic base.

The City and the Airport of Big Spring are very very supportive of our Nationals competition unlike almost any other place where we fly in the US. They give us the run of their airport, the use of their terminal, water, ice cream, cart retrieval, hangar space, on, and on. We just want to show them how much we appreciate their fantastic support (which helps keep the entry fees low).

We do this by supporting the Rainbow Room, which provides needed supplies to children under the care of Child Protective Services, the Howard County Child Welfare Board. The Rainbow Room pays for emergency supplies for foster children in Big Spring, and we account for the majority of their funding. The money is spent on everything from diapers for infants removed from violent situations to teenagers who want to attend their prom.

We normally raise money each year from the hang glider pilots who come to the Welcome Dinner that the Tourist Board puts on your us the night before the Big Spring Nationals begins. Just passing the hat. We. have often raised over $4,000 in one night from less than 40 pilots. This year the Cloudbase Foundation is supporting our efforts with an additional $5,000 matching donation, so we very much want to raise that $5,000 first to make it a $10,000 donation. We raised over $9,000 last year with $1,000 coming from the Cloudbase Foundation.
