What IS Defiant Joy?

Defiant Joy is actively pursuing happiness in the face of great grief and challenge. It describes the heart of the work that Dancing Classrooms has done for the past 26 years: using social dance as a tool for developing resilience and building community.

Against this year’s backdrop of isolation, grief, and unrest, we have seen defiant joy practiced in so many ways: the mastery of new steps performed for the first time on Zoom screens and in parks; our teaching artists pivoting their teaching practice to create brave spaces in every session; and YOU, our community of supporters who show up time and time again to help us offer the healing power of dance to young people.

In our partnership with PS MS 95X in the Bronx, a K-8 grade school we have worked with for almost twenty years, the Dancing Classrooms residency was an anchor for teachers and students alike. In a ZIP code with one of the highest pandemic mortality rates in the city, the school suffered many losses from COVID, including their beloved Assistant Principal, Mr. Flores.
“In the beginning I felt kinda stressed and tired... but after the warm up, I felt energized. Then with the merengue part, I felt like myself in my Hispanic culture. I’m grateful to you for boosting my mood up.”
