WHAT IS THE "SPEAK, MOVE, CHANGE" VIRTUAL COLLECTIVE?

Dr. Shalon's Maternal Action Project, in partnership with the Tatia Oden French Memorial Foundation and the ARIAH Foundation, are the co-producers and the host organizations who created Speak, Move, Change (SMC); a virtual series that is offered annually to participants throughout the United States, in honor of Black Maternal Health Week. SMC was created to amplify the reproductive justice and birth equity movements and to address the black maternal health crisis. SMC invites community members, reproductive activists, advocates, academics, midwives, doulas and persons who have the lived experiences of birth trauma and loss, to gather together to learn, grow, heal and ACT in response to this crisis. Our goal is to raise $75,000 to support our national work, to host virtual events to amplify the message and the movement and to conduct research to measure our impact and outcomes.

THE NATIONAL POSTPARTUM AWARENESS WEEK FOR BIPOC BIRTHING PEOPLE?

In May 2023, the 3 organizations, in partnership with stakeholders from across the country, launched the National Postpartum Awareness Week (PAW) Campaign for Black Indigenous People of Color birthing people. This national movement invites individuals, groups, institutions and organizations from across the country to focus their attention, resources and energy on the postpartum period (4th Trimester) when BIPOC women, birthing people and their babies are most at risk for birth related complications and/or fatal outcomes. PAW takes placed annually during the week leading up to Mother's Day (from the Sunday thru the Saturday before the holiday). PAW partners are asked to host events, lead conversations, share stories, conduct research, create activations etc. to mitigate these adverse outcomes in BIPOC communities.
