The Experimental Station, Invisible Institute, Build Coffee, and South Side Weekly are working with Star Farm Chicago to provide free boxes of local produce, eggs, and bread to our neighbors across the South Side, to support households facing food insecurity and the farmers that feed us.

Market Box was conceived as a pandemic response during the state-wide stay at home order in April. We saw our neighbors further thrust into financial precarity at the same time farmers markets around the city were shut down. By sourcing from small, independent farms and producers, Market Box supports our local farmers while delivering fresh, high-quality food for free to Black, low-income residents of the South Side. The boxes provide a fresh supplement to pantry groceries that people access through food banks. With the help of our community, this project grew rapidly: Market Box has made over 4400 deliveries this summer, and now brings local food to 200 households every week. In this ongoing crisis, demand is unrelenting, and we’re committed to serve our network of ~400 families all the way through the harvest season. Each box is $40. With your help, our ecosystem of mutual aid can grow stronger during the pandemic.
