The Power of Friendship

by Friends LA

Fact: L.A. County has the largest population of foster children in the United States.

This isn't news to us, but too many are unaware.

At Friends of the Children - Los Angeles (Friends LA), we commit 12+ years to children and parents who face multiple systemic barriers and those placed at risk for foster care.

Our mentoring model is unique and innovative. We pair our long-term, salaried, professional mentors – called Friends – with children for four hours each week from kindergarten through high school graduation, no matter what. We don't stop there. We utilize a two-generation approach to achieve the greatest impact. Our work is not only focused on the needs of our youth, but their parents as well. In just 3 years, we have achieved the following outcomes:

- 95% of youth made progress on social and emotional development, such as asking for help from a caring adult, practicing healthy ways to cope with stress, and building relationships with Friends and adults who provide social support and connections to resources.

- 93% of youth made progress on attaining skills for safety and independence, setting short and long-term goals and monitoring progress toward them.

- 95% of youth made progress toward school success, such as finishing homework, regularly attending school, or staying focused in the classroom.

At our core, we believe in keeping families together and ending multi-generational poverty. We pledge to continue to enrich the lives of those we serve through the power of a positive, meaningful relationship with the support of a Friend. However, we can't do this without you and our village of support. Through the power of your friendship and generosity, we can continue to show up for our youth and families and deliver on our commitment to walk alongside them for 12+ years, no matter what.

Will you partner with us this to support our mission and invest in the future of our youth?
