The Free Root Operation was founded in 2015 by Eva Maria Lewis, then only in high school. With few resources, but an unstoppable drive and vision to create change in her city, Eva went to work. She began grassroots organizing the South Shore neighborhood in order to build connections with community members and understand how to best serve them. She used her network to grow FRO’s impact, team, and programmatic efforts. Since its inception, our organization has not been a matter of if or when, but how.

We're raising $250,00 to sustain our programming, grow our team, and better serve Black and Brown communities in Chicago.

Our programs include a Data Collection effort in South Shore which seeks to understand the needs and assets of our community, the Chicago Food Pairing Program which makes agency based nourishment accessible, the Activist and Organizer Fund which supports those who uphold our communities, and our beloved Education Emancipation campaign which seeks to mitigate the affects of the school to prison pipeline. More information about our programming can be found here.

Your contribution will help us to grow FRO beyond our imagination. The work we do is near and dear to our hearts, and it is even more satisfying to know that it is catalyzed through the support of people like you. We thank you for stopping by to learn about us, and we hope you join our community.
