The large Choir Carpet is the work of the Manufacture royale de la Savonnerie workhop, and based on drawings of Jacques-Louis Saint-Ange (1780-1860). Made of wool and completed in 1833, the carpet is 200m squared. Philippe d'Orléans, Count of Paris, grandson of King Louis-Philippe and heir to the throne, was baptized at Notre-Dame Cathedral on May 2, 1841, during a sumptuous ceremony presided over by Bishop Affre. The cathedral was entirely decorated for hte occasion according to Viollet-le-Duc's designs. This carpet was offered to the city of Paris by King Louis-Philippe, probably after the baptism.
