On September 1st, Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 hurricane, made contact in the Bahamas. With historically high wind speeds, the storm caused massive devastation to the area. The impacts were intensified when the storm stalled over the island Great Abaco and Grand Bahama Island for a total of 24 long and punishing hours. According to reports, the official death toll now stands at 20, but that number is expected to rise sharply in the coming days.

In the Bahamas, Dorian leveled neighborhoods and decimated docks. Local airports remain submerged under several feet of water, even days after the hurricane has moved away over the Atlantic Ocean.

Dorian has now downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane but continues to lash the southeastern coastline of the United States.
