Founded in 1993 by Gig Harbor resident, David Cathers, the Gig Harbor Basket Brigade (GHBB) became a program of the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation in 2015. In 1993, its first year, the Basket Brigade provided full Thanksgiving meals for eight unsuspecting families in need. Every year since, the GHBB has grown to serve an increasing number of area families.

In 2019, across the two-day operation, some 450 volunteers packed and delivered nearly 1,500 Thanksgiving baskets to local families in need, and area military families. For more than two decades, the Gig Harbor Basket Brigade has engaged hundreds of volunteers who have raised food and funds, decorated Thanksgiving boxes, and packaged and delivered more than 216,000 meals!

2020 is no different, and COVID will not defeat this community tradition. Given the pandemic and safety guidelines we will not be able to gather and pack Thanksgiving baskets for families, however we will still be ensuring that we are able to provide meals for local families through gift cards to local stores. With these gift cards Thanksgiving Basket Brigade recipients can visit a local store to shop for their Thanksgiving meal.

Each year, it takes about $35,000 and hundreds of helping hands to make the GHBB possible.
