We believe that food scraps are a valuable resource that should be composted and used in the community. That's why we’re turning a former Brownfield site at 34 Fuller Street into the West End Composting Hub -- a community composting site and compost education center. You can see a gorgeous rendering of the future hub in the image above.

About 30% of our waste stream is compostable. In the landfill, that compostable material takes up space and releases methane. Instead, we want to compost it and return it back to the community to grow food, capture stormwater, grow our urban tree canopy, and more. 25% of our compost will be sold to community gardens at a steeply discounted rate, supporting local urban agriculture. Additionally, the new compost site will create skilled green jobs for neighborhood residents.

The brownfield remediation of the site took place in fall, 2023. Over 600 cubic yards of contaminated soil was removed! We are currently working on Phase 1 of construction, which is all of the underground infrastructure (stormwater, utilities, building footings and foundations). In Phase 2, the site will be capped, meaning the existing soil will be covered with pavement or clean soil. This will complete the brownfield remediation.

The third and final phase will involve completing the buildings, planting the gardens, and installing the mixing system for the in-vessel composter. Unfortunately, this spring the EPA unlawfully terminated of two Environmental Justice grants that we received for this project and other program expansions, so we do not currently have the funding to complete Phase 3. But we are working hard to raise the funds to cover this gap and make bring this important project to life! Please help us if you are able!
