THANK YOU!

May 7, 2020: A Message from Sue Landers, Executive Director, Lambda Literary

If someone had told me at the beginning of 2020 that in just a few short months, Lambda Literary would be facing an existential threat unlike anything in our history, that all of our programs for kids, emerging writers, and book lovers were facing an immediate end, I wouldn’t have believed them.

How could the nation’s de facto home for LGBTQ writers just disappear? For more than 30 years, Lambda Literary has provided the programs, tools, recognition, and space to affirm the value of LGBTQ literary life, create community, and preserve legacies.

Thankfully, because of you and 1,500 others, that grim, alternative ending will not come to pass. In just two weeks, your donations helped stabilize Lambda, and have enabled us to begin planning for the future, a future where Lambda Literary is committed to serving LGBTQ writers better than ever because we are going to need to.

The pandemic’s impact on the LGBTQ literary community has been, and will continue to be, devastating. So many of us are struggling to get by, are grieving, have fallen ill, or have been lost.

Lambda Literary’s support for queer writers and readers has never been more vital. Through LGBTQ literarature, we communicate our experiences, process grief and pain, understand our history, and fight for a brighter future.

Thank you for helping Lambda Literary create and defend a world where LGBTQ narratives matter.

Please help us ensure that Lambda Literary can continue to respond creatively and powerfully as we move through this historic time. If you are able to make another donation, or become a monthly supporter, please take a moment to give right now.

We are reaching out today because Lambda Literary needs your help to survive.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on so many people, families, and organizations—including ours. It has forced us to suspend much of the work we do on behalf of the LGBTQ community and has disrupted many sources of our income.

For the first time in our history, we cancelled the annual Lambda Literary Awards ceremony. We’ve also suspended our work that brings LGBTQ books and authors into schools and we’ve postponed numerous public gatherings.

Like many arts organizations that serve historically marginalized communities, we do not have deep cash reserves from which to draw. We have reached a critical juncture where Lambda Literary’s very survival is at risk.

Without immediate and substantial financial assistance, Lambda Literary will be forced to cease operations.

Our biggest source of support has always been you, our community. We know that there will be no going back to “normal” after this crisis has passed, but we also don’t want to see a world without Lambda Literary.

For over thirty years, this one-of-a-kind organization has centered and celebrated LGBTQ voices because books affirm, validate, and save LGBTQ lives. And we must continue to champion LGBTQ writers and their books, bringing our community together in good times and bad to celebrate our truths.

Over the course of our history:

  • Over 320,000 visitors have read our reviews of LGBTQ books.
  • 7,000 young people have read and met with LGBTQ writers who we brought into their schools.
  • 3,500 authors have had their work celebrated at the annual Lambda Literary Awards.
  • More than 500 aspiring authors have their life changed by attending our Writer’s Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices.
  • And countless people have attended readings we’ve hosted to expand the audience for LGBTQ literature.

Lambda Literary is here to create—and defend—a world where LGBTQ narratives matter. Only with your support can this work continue.

Please help us ensure that the vital work of Lambda will continue. Your donation in any amount will make a difference, be used wisely, and be deeply appreciated.

In community and resilience,

Amy Scholder, President, Board of Trustees, Lambda Literary
Sue Landers, Executive Director, Lambda Literary
