The New York Youth Symphony (NYYS) is a premier cultural institution recognized for its excellence in music education, performance, and commissioning. Its mission is to educate and inspire young musicians between the ages of 12 to 22 through exceptional ensemble training and performance opportunities.

The NYYS was founded in 1963 to showcase the metropolitan area’s most gifted young orchestral musicians. The organization has grown significantly since then, adding programs in chamber music (1983), conducting (1993), composition (2000), and jazz (2002) and musical theater songwriting (2018).  Through First Music, its commissioning program, NYYS has commissioned more than 170 new works from America’s best young orchestral, jazz and chamber music composers since 1984. Over 7,000 alumni can be found around the globe, bonded by their experience in the NYYS.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has shuttered concert halls around the country, the NYYS has and will continue to engage and educate its students both online and in small in-person settings. 285 young musicians were selected to participate in the 20/21 season and due to the flexibility of the online offerings, students hail from throughout the United States in Nebraska, Florida, California, Massachusetts, and even England. Students are receiving exceptional musical training through weekly rehearsals, sectionals, master classes and workshops as they become the next generation of musical citizens.
