For 35 years, Peaslee Neighborhood Center has been a trusted community hub, and we are so proud of our inclusive, welcoming space built through love and hard work. More than ever during this time, Peaslee is working to anchor and sustain our community through the challenges ahead. We have been working to stay connected with our community and to be responsive to their needs by offering virtual music and arts enrichment programs, lending devices and other materials for remote learning, and distributing groceries. It is rewarding to know that our programs are as important as ever to families during this chaotic time. You can read more about our recent work in this 2020 update.
Our event’s new name is inspired by Peaslee’s founding women, who struggled for years to acquire the former Peaslee School, a community asset they were determined to keep as an educational resource. They overcame every roadblock until the keys were finally theirs—yet every penny of what they raised went toward the building purchase, leaving them with no funds to develop programming. In those early days, the women of Peaslee were “making a way out of no way.” Thirty-five years later, we continue to make a way toward our vision of a just and inclusive community.
