Our farmers, like many Houstonians, do not have the luxury of working remotely and they depend upon weekly sales of produce to pay their bills and support their families. In just the third week of March, we’ve seen our restaurant sales dry up as our friends in that industry deal with the fall out of social distancing and mandated closings. Restaurant sales make up 20% of our farmers’ income, so we are hoping our weekly farm share subscriptions maintain current levels. But with the speed that this unprecedented public health and economic situation is evolving, we know that things may be very different by next week.

Will you invest in our “Rainy Day” Fund?

We are paying close attention to local and federal government and health entities to ensure the health of our farmers and community. Already we indefinitely postponed a fundraising event out of an abundance of caution. If we must further curtail operations, we – like a majority of nonprofit organizations and small businesses -- do not have a long-term safety net in place to provide pay to our farmers and staff, nevermind keeping the lights on at the packing warehouse and running our cold storage units. Our “Rainy Day” Fund will provide a cushion to allow us to continue operations even if our normal streams of general operating revenue temporarily recede.
