Winter Warmth Campaign 2020

by Prevention Point Philadelphia

URGENT: We are raising $100,000 to ensure our community members survive COVID-19 this winter! Help us provide emergency services and supply packs for people facing housing insecurity. A private funder has pledged to MATCH every donation dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000!

For several years, Kensington’s street homeless population has hovered between 200 and 400 people each winter. Individuals experiencing co-occurring substance use and street homelessness in this neighborhood have typically relied on low-barrier options and local community resources for respite from the elements.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of those options will not be available this winter. Over the past nine months, many of Prevention Point's services have been forced to move partially or entirely outdoors. The cold temperatures will make it difficult, if not impossible, to continue operating these programs safely without weatherizing outdoor spaces and/or forcing programs to decrease capacity by moving a modified version of their work indoors to maintain COVID safety.

Heading into winter battling all of our regular challenges but adding COVID-19, our people need help. To ensure that our community survives the winter during a pandemic when other low-barrier options have become unavailable, PPP is raising $100,000 for a multi-faceted winter initiative. This initiative includes:

  • heated, tented areas that provide social distancing space
  • reconfiguring our current respite facilities for overnight warming centers (for extreme weather)
  • provision of emergency supply packs including blankets, hats, hand warmers, mittens, etc. for clients that are not able to access services to prevent them from dying on the street from exposure to extreme weather.

We know that with your support, we can save hundreds of lives this winter. And, thanks to a private funder, your donation is MATCHED, dollar-for-dollar, up to $50,000! Our community of supporters is expansive, generous, and believes in our work. Thank you for donating to our Winter Warmth campaign and please spread the word!
