Each May we ask the community to help us collect gluten free and allergy-friendly food to stock our shelves at the Howard County Food Bank, our Emergency Food Pantry, and monthly client choice distribution with Columbia Community Care.  This year, our 3rd Annual People Powered Food Drive includes an alternative virtual food drive to collect monetary donations.  As always, these donations will be used to purchase gluten free and allergy-friendly items for our clients.  When donating online, you will receive a tax-deductible donation receipt immediately.  Our clients appreciate your help. We commend you for your generosity in this unprecedented health and economic emergency!

Our mission - S.A.F.E. Food Pantry educates, inspires, and engages the community about the necessity for gluten free and allergy-friendly food and provides that safe food to those in need.  As an all-volunteer organization, S.A.F.E. distributes gluten free and allergy-friendly food to clients through its partnerships with the Howard County Food Bank and Columbia Community Care, and our Emergency Food Pantry in Howard County

Our impact - Gluten free and allergy-friendly food costs 2-4 times more than regular food. It is a rare find on food bank shelves causing clients to choose between going hungry or eating something that will aggravate their medical condition. In Maryland, over 1 million individuals, including over 42,000 in Howard County, deal with food allergies, celiac disease, and gluten sensitivity every day. According to Feeding America, the overall food insecure rate (pre-pandemic) in Howard County was 6.4% (approx. 20K persons) and 11.8% for children (approx. 9K children).  Applying the food allergy and celiac rates to the county food insecure population suggests that the group includes some 6K adults and children who suffer from food allergies and celiac disease.  These statistics do not include the 5.5% of the population suffering from gluten sensitivity and the individuals impacted by related autoimmune conditions, all of whom benefit from a gluten free and allergy-friendly diet. S.A.F.E. is the only organization in Maryland making this food available to food pantry clients.
