The Amara STAR (Strong Tough And Resilient) Adoptee Mentorship Program empowers adoptees to build a healthy and strong adoptee identity and positive community connections through a unique group mentorship model celebrating the adoptee experience.

Presenter: Angela Tucker, Director of Post-Adoption Services

Founded in 1921 and based in  Washington State, Amara is a not-for-profit focused on the well-being of children as they enter, experience, and transition out of foster care via adoption or reunification with their family of origin.

We serve more than 1,500 children and adults each year through three programs: Emergency Sanctuary, Foster and Adopt, and Post-Adoption. When a child enters foster care, we provide them with a safe place to land at our Emergency Sanctuaries. If a child cannot return to their family, we prepare foster and adoptive families by offering individualized coaching and support. We recognize that adoption is a lifetime commitment and continue to be a resource post-adoption for adoptees and those who love them.

Amara employs an expansive definition of family – one that’s inclusive and affirming of all our diverse communities to give our kids the best opportunities to thrive. That’s why we offer our support to adoptees whether adopted through Amara or not. We support children entering foster care to maintain connections with their families and community. We create opportunities for all members of an adoptee’s biological family to feel supported in pursuing a healthy relationship with their child and their child’s family.

We are proud to work with all families, regardless of marital status, race, religion, political beliefs,  gender identity, or sexual orientation.
