At Seeking Solace, we believe that every family deserves safe, affirming, and compassionate care during pregnancy, birth, and beyond. Yet in Northwest Ohio, we continue to see alarming disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes. Black birthing people are three to four times more likely to experience complications or death during childbirth, and too many families in low-income or rural communities lack access to supportive, culturally competent care. That’s why we launched the Seeking Solace Birthwork Scholarship—a program designed to remove financial barriers for aspiring doulas and midwives, especially those who are Black, Queer, and/or from low-income backgrounds. These scholarships directly fund training for birthworkers who will go on to serve the families most impacted by systemic inequities.
