THE OCEAN KNOWS NO BORDERS!!!
There is an on-going emergency situation both north and south of the border: cross-border releases of untreated sewage and industrial chemicals are flowing upstream from Tijuana polluting and plaguing the San Diego border region.
This decades long issue continues to threaten public health, the environment, tourism and the economy, both north and south of the border. It is also an issue of national security with members of the Navy and Border Patrol getting sick from working in the region.
Back in February 2017, over 143 million gallons of raw sewage was discharged into the Tijuana River, upstream in Tijuana, MX. Since then, there have been countless additional small scale spills, and yet, more than two years later, there has been little federal or state emergency clean-up effort, despite ill residents and dead wildlife.
Surfrider Foundation San Diego is working to advance policy and legislation to solve this ongoing threat, test the waters to make sure you know it’s safe to be in it, and make the public aware of this issue while creating change.
Your donation will help us keep a part-time staff member as our Clean Border Water Policy Coordinator. Our CBWN Policy Coordinator is deeply needed, as this position helps us form our policy, meet with government officials, and raise awareness about the issue. Your donation ensures that we have a dedicated staff member specifically available to focus on this complex bi-national issue.
