Be the Peace, Be the Hope, a non-profit initiative supported by The Texan-French Alliance for the Arts, is on a mission to increase emotional intelligence to aid vulnerable children, youth and teachers in navigating the world with increased well-being. Be the Peace Be the Hope was a recipient of the Menninger Innovation Grant for Mental Health, ran 280 workshops for Harvey victims, has aided highly traumatized populations in refugee camps and orphanages in Lebanon, Iraq, Burkina Faso (West Africa) and India as well as over 3000 children in vulnerable situations throughout HISD.   

MANY vulnerable children/youth are now FURTHER at risk than before. 

Many of them do not have technology such as a computer while others have now become homeless. The long-term impact to not only these children/youth, but to the U.S. economy if we don’t fix these problems is great.   

With a track-record of up to 80% increase in resilience, 60% decrease in anxiety and depression, 50% increase in self-efficacy, and 36% increase in physical and emotional safety, we were asked to provide an immediate solution to empower our vulnerable students and teachers rise above the COVID 19 crisis.  

What Are We Doing About it?   

We began with an initial study to better understand what leaders, teachers and students needed to transform challenge into victory.  We approached 4 educational leaders, 13 teachers and 20 students who were able to participate in a formal study, phone interviews or classroom polling.    

Based on the study, we designed weekly Zoom remote live learning sessions addressing the needs highlighted in the quick survey. As we began our work, the students were able to have a voice regarding what they needed on a personal level, allowing us to meet them where they are.    

We also began a self-care support group specifically for teachers. Additionally, we created specific advisory consultations with students in order to test the content we are providing for them.    

How do the students and teachers FEEL about the work we have been up to with them?  

Teachers are saying: “This is the first time we see our students so engaged since the beginning of the lockdown. Students are starting to share their feelings and challenges and discuss ways to deal with them”   

  

What’s Needed?   

As we have experienced challenges first-hand –we need a further, in-depth study to fully help students in Houston, throughout Texas as well as nationally. In order to do that, we have joined forces with communication, learning and technology experts – The Performance Communication Company and Lean Mastery.    

We also need to continue to address the needs of students, teachers and school administration to finish out the year as well as invest in the development of next gen tools that will continue to serve our vulnerable population and schools at large.  

Finally, while we ourselves have been in crisis to survive the crisis as a non-profit, our leaders have stood up and delivered this necessary aid – without financial support. In order to continue our work, we need your help.
