Founded in 2004, The Baobab Home is a small, community-focused NGO whose mission is to help children from families affected by HIV/AIDS, mental illness, and poverty. We accomplish this through a range of projects, including a family-style orphanage, a primary school (Steven Tito Academy), a breakfast program, an organic farm and general outreach work in the community.

We are located on a 12 acre farm where we raise organic fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry and cows just outside of Bagamoyo, Tanzania, next to Steven Tito Academy (STA), a primary school established in 2012 as a program of The Baobab Home. STA provides underprivileged but bright children with a quality English-medium education and a safe learning environment.

Volunteers are an integral part of our organization and play key roles across all areas including the school, children’s home, and farm. Volunteers serve various positions including teacher, marketing, finance and accounting, environmental and agricultural experts, etc. We would not be able to accomplish as much as we do without the work of our volunteers.

Through the years, we’ve had volunteers from 22 countries around the world come to collaborate with us. And yet, one of the challenges we face when volunteers come for short or long stays to work with us is housing. Currently, we do not have dedicated housing for volunteers on our property. As we look to the future of our organization and our increased reliance on volunteers, we want to establish a place for volunteers to stay onsite which could also be used for other purposes as needed.

We are in the early stages of defining requirements for volunteer housing and talking to architects about our best path forward. Our base costs (based on other similar buildings we’ve built on the farm) will be $30,000 USD. Once we have specific requirements defined with architects and builders, that cost could increase.

To make our volunteer housing a reality, we need your help! Please click the link below to make a donation directly through our online fundraising page.

Thank you (Asante sana in Swahili)!
