The newsroom is quiet, but we're busier than ever

Since 1893, The Red & Black has served the University of Georgia and Athens with two missions. First, we train the next generation of news professionals through journalistic best practices in a real-world modern newsroom. Second, we serve our audience with thoughtful, timely, accurate and independent news and information.

Our weekly print editions and daily online coverage remain free to all. No news outlet covers the University of Georgia more completely than The Red & Black. And, with cutbacks at local news organizations, we stepped up to increase coverage of local government and other Athens news. We're one of the largest community news organizations in Georgia.

Like every news organization, we feel the stunning effect of the COVID-19 crisis.

As UGA switched to online classes, we suspended print editions through summer 2020. It's simply not a good use of resources to print newspapers when tens of thousands of readers have left Athens. But we have ramped up our already robust online coverage, adding reporters to our news desk and creating digital-only versions of our special publications.

The Red & Black is an independent, nonprofit student news organization. We receive no funding from the state or university. We support ourselves through ad sales, events and donations. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we lost virtually all print advertising revenue and had to cancel events. Although we are growing digital revenue and slashed expenses, we face a massive shortfall.

Whether you are a former Red & Black staff member, a UGA graduate or a reader who relies on our coverage of UGA and Athens, your support can help keep this institution around for another 127 years. By supporting The Red & Black today, you're also supporting the next generation of journalists.
