COVID-19 continues to impact all of our lives worldwide. We share experiences of anxiety and uncertainty; lockdowns and social distancing. We also know this pandemic exacerbates existing inequities and further marginalizes those who are already vulnerable, particularly communities in the Global South.

When the pandemic first hit, our initial action was to launch a fund to respond to the immediate needs of our grassroots partners. Compounding the ever-growing pandemic, our partners are battling inadequate access to information and healthcare; decreasing income as lockdowns expand; increased gender-based violence in the home; and state violence from militarized responses and surveillance.

Resources from this fund are directly supporting our partners’ ingenious responses –– like turning a training center into a COVID-19 field hospital in Brazil; connecting small scale farmers with communities facing food insecurity in urban areas in South Africa; and strengthening existing mutual-aid practices in India.

Thanks to the generous Thousand Currents community, we were able to raise funds for these emergency grants in just three weeks!

As we think ahead, so much remains uncertain. What we do know is that it is vital to double down on sustained, flexible core support for our partners so they can best manage the complexity of this crisis. We ask ourselves, do our movements currently have the necessary resources to build resilience in the medium and long-term as they face unprecedented challenges? They do not.

That is why for the next phase of the Above & Beyond Solidarity Fund, we are excited to expand our goal to $5,000,000.

This bold vision will allow us to increase our regular unrestricted grant amount to support not only rapid response, but community resilience in the year ahead.

These times are tough for all of us. Yet in order to overcome this shared struggle, let us express, through solidarity with communities around the world, support for long-term community resilience.

Will you join us in doubling down to rise up together?
