Each day we'll feature a new Truth Be Told graduate bravely sharing her story and truth with the world.

This year, we aim to raise $100,000 to expand Truth Be Told programs in 2022. Our programs help women come face to face with their trauma, understand and manage the symptoms.

Our programs fill a documented service-gap in prison programs. There are various prison programs available to women, but none that address trauma in this manner.

Helping women heal their trauma helps them improve their relationships, manage their emotions better, make better decisions, and have a better chance of remaining free after release. Supporting women’s trauma healing helps women repair the relationship with themselves.

For the last 21 years, Truth Be Told has provided transformational programs for women, who are or have been incarcerated, resulting in decreased symptoms of trauma, increased self-worth, accountability, and positive contributions to the community.

We envision a society where all justice involved women are restored to integrity, thereby breaking the cycle of incarceration.

86.2% of Truth Be Told graduates remain free three years after their release from prison. Three years is the benchmark for success post-prison release.

72% of Truth Be Told program participants at four state prisons* were mothers.

70% of children with incarcerated parents will end up incarcerated at some point in their life.

Truth Be Told breaks the intergenerational cycles of trauma and incarceration.

-DESIGNED FOR WOMEN BY WOMEN

Most programs in women's prisons are developed for men. Our gender-responsive programming addresses the unique risk factors that lead women into the criminal legal system — namely, high rates of interpersonal violence, substance abuse, mental health issues, and histories of childhood physical and sexual abuse.

Our programs weave together elements of restorative justice, storytelling, mindfulness, meditation, life skills, and other self-care tools.

Post-release, our Beyond Bars Program offers our graduates a safe community of emotional support through weekly peer-led conference calls, private online forums, in-person gatherings, continued educational workshops, and a support line.
