For the first time in nearly 200 years, we need to replace our slate roof, which will carry our community into the next century and beyond.
This Raise the Roof campaign is critical to help us reach our funding target.
South Church is a thriving Unitarian Universalist congregation, but it is also home to our larger community in so many ways. People all across the Seacoast have climbed the stone steps of South Church to:
South Church also helps so many people and organizations in our wider community with financial and volunteer support. As well as serving children and families far beyond those who attend our church through comprehensive sexuality education programs.
In short, our roof creates space for so many.
14,000 pieces of slate x $65 per installed piece = $938,000 to complete the roof.
But we've made great progress and only have 7% remaining to fund this project. To date, congregation contributions make up 44%, NH Land & Community Heritage Grants make up 36%, and a loan fulfills 13%.
Help us cross the finish line, with the last remaining $65,000 to Raise the Roof!
South Church is the beloved and historic stone church located in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, NH. The church was built between 1824 and 1826, and it is one of the earliest examples of Classical Revival architecture in New England. South Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In April 2021, for the first time in nearly 200 years, roofers began to remove the slate from the building in preparation for new slate roof which will carry our community into the next century and beyond.
At South Church, we nurture spiritual growth through worship, learning and community,
We celebrate the worth and dignity of all people,
And we inspire one another to act on our faith in the larger community.
