Summer of Service provides participants an intense, hands on, cultural immersion at the Sioux YMCA in Dupree, South Dakota. By spending a week on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Reservation, our teens work directly with the community by planning and delivering a week of day camp for the youth in Dupree. This will be the 6th year that a handful of teens from our Y will participate in this unique and impactful cultural experience.
As you might expect, our group gets as much out of the experience as do the kids in Dupree. Teens will have a cultural, historical and socio-economic experience that will give them a different and deeper appreciation of the YMCAs impact.
If you are interested in supporting this summer experience, then please make a contribution today! Join us in fundraising for this summer experience by creating your own fundraising page and sharing with your friends and family!
“There’s something unique about the culture on the reservation. Before you go, we are told about different things we may see and feel so we’re aware that it’s real. Sometimes that can be confusing, other times, heartbreaking. But overall, it’s unexpected, which is strange because you’re informed about it. It means you end up taking a step back, realizing how privileged you are and how little you can do about it. That doesn’t make it horrible or anything, it just makes it real.” –2019 Program Participant
