What if your kitchen scraps could become a resource for healthier soil instead of going into the trash?
Join us at Held & Healed Animal Sanctuary for a hands-on introduction to Bokashi composting, a simple fermentation method that allows you to process a much larger range of your kitchen scraps—including meat, dairy, and cooked foods—with very little space or odor.
During this interactive workshop, you'll learn:
🪣 How Bokashi fermentation works
🥕 What you can—and can't—put in your Bokashi bucket
🦠 The role beneficial microorganisms play in the process
🌱 How to set up and maintain your own system at home
👃 How to recognize successful fermentation and troubleshoot common problems
♻️ What to do with your Bokashi once fermentation is complete
And this is where things get really interesting.
Bokashi is the first step in a larger hands-on series exploring how different composting and regenerative waste systems can work together.
We'll end this workshop with fermented Bokashi ready for its next stage. In Workshop 2, we'll make biochar, and in Workshop 3, we'll bring Bokashi, biochar, animal manure, and other organic materials together to build a nutrient-rich compost pile.
Future workshops will also explore vermicomposting, composting toilets, and humanure composting.
Each workshop stands on its own, so you can attend just the topics that interest you—or follow the entire series to see how different materials and methods connect as we turn waste into resources and build healthier soil.
