This series of three workshops explores the process of on-the-go drawing, painting, and journaling, to promote mindful encounters with nature that encourage environmental awareness, historical knowledge, and respect for civics. Introducing each workshop with a brief PowerPoint slideshowMcElhinney will unpack new sets of concepts and methods through practical demonstration, followed by questions-and-answers. 


Open to all ages 16 and above. No prior artistic training required. A list of suggested supplies will be sent to all who registerAnything that makes a mark and any surface that takes a mark are suitable to use. 


Participants may sign up for workshops individually or the entire series.

James Lancel McElhinney is a visual artist, author, independent scholar, and fine-press publisher. He holds an MFA in painting from Yale, and a BFA from the Tyler School of Art. McElhinney is the recipient of fellowships and grants, including a 2017 Pollock Krasner Grant and a prior Visual Artist fellowship from National Endowment for the Arts. McElhinney is the author of Sketchbook Traveler: Hudson Valley, the first in a series. His work was exhibited in Discover the Hudson Anew: James McElhinney and the Art of Seeing, opening September 13, 2019 at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, New York. His work may be found in numerous public collections including the Albany Institute of History and Art, Hudson River Museum, West Point Museum, and New York Public Library.
