Beyond the Ruling: Advancing Equity in Education 

On Tuesday, February 11th, Breakthrough Greater Boston will host our 17th Annual Breakthroughs in Education event: Beyond the Ruling: Advancing Equity in Education. The program will feature a profound panel of experts in the field of education. 

Join us for a light reception with food and drink followed by talks from our featured speakers to hear their expertise on the effect of the Supreme Court ruling.

Panel Discussion: 

The panel will bring together diverse voices from the educational community, including: 

• Derrick Young, Jr., MPH. – Co-founder and Executive Director of Leadership Brainery, a nonprofit addressing inequitable access to master’s and doctoral degrees and workforce leadership opportunities for underrepresented talent.  

• Maria Dykema Erb, M.Ed. – Executive Director of the Boston University’s Newbury Center, which fosters the holistic development and success of first-generation undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. 

• Nabeeha Samater – Current Boston University student and Breakthrough Greater Boston alumna, providing the student perspective on educational equity. 

Panel Moderator:

Natasha Warikoo, Ph.D., is Stern Professor in the Social Sciences in the Department of Sociology at Tufts University. A former Guggenheim Fellow and high school teacher, Warikoo is the author of four award-winning books, including Race at the Top: Asian Americans and Whites in Pursuit of the American Dream in Suburban Schools and Is Affirmative Action Fair? The Myth of Equity in College Admissions. Warikoo completed her PhD in sociology from Harvard University, and BSc/BA in mathematics and philosophy at Brown University. Her summer as a teaching fellow at Breakthrough in Providence nearly thirty years ago launched her career, first as a teacher in New York City’s public schools and then as a scholar of inequality in education.
