You are invited to DWEJ's first ever Zoom Watch Party, to be held during Earth Day Week on Tuesday, April 20 from 7PM-8:30PM. Join us for an exclusive screening of "The Sacrifice Zone", a powerful and acclaimed short film about the fight for environmental justice in Newark, NJ's notorious Ironbound neighborhood. DWEJ is proud to be the first organization to host a viewing of this movie in the Midwest! The Ironbound is considered one of the most polluted neighborhoods in the country and has much in common with many parts of Detroit.
We are also excited to announce our special guest for the evening, Maria Lopez-Nuñez. Maria is the Deputy Director of Organizing and Advocacy at the Ironbound Community Corporation and is featured prominently in the film. She will be discussing the film and her experiences leading residents in her multiethnic neighborhood as they fight to break the cycle of poor communities of color serving as "sacrifice zones" and as dumping grounds for our society's waste byproducts. Maria will also be available to take your questions in a smaller "After Party" Q&A event.
In addition to "The Sacrifice Zone", we will be sharing one of our original "Solar Stories of Detroit" short films. Film/series co-creator, and DWEJ Program Manager, Catherine Diggs will discuss "Advocating for Their Right to Breathe Clean Air: Gesu School's Student-Led Rooftop Solar Project". Joining Catherine will be Anita Sevier, Development and Alumni Relations Director from Gesu Catholic School, and a group of student alumni who led the project.
Proceeds from the Watch Party will benefit Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice as we pursue our mission advocating for a healthy environment through innovative community and policy action that values all people. Invite your friends! We look forward to seeing you on April 20th!
Note: Sponsorships include admission to the Main Event and the After Party
