A sneaky introduction to CAD and parametric 3D design using Autodesk Fusion 360 and a made up ruler

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

NYC FIRST would like to introduce students, coaches and teachers to reverse engineering without proper tools, innovate and improvise, and take a dive into the concept of parametric modeling - using parameters or variables, containing values and formulas, that can be edited to manipulate or alter an entire design, shape or form - changes to parameters, at any time, automatically update the design. At the same time, participants will build basic skills in CAD and 3D design.

Participants in this workshop will learn how they can make their own measuring instrument and use it in conjunction with Autodesk Fusion 360 to create a parametric 3D model of the objects surrounding them at home. Fusion 360 is a collaborative, cloud-based environment that offers all-in-one 2D and 3D CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing) software. During this workshop, we will cover (1) understanding rulers and units and how we can make our own ruler with our own units (2) go over what is parametric design (3) and we will attempt reverse engineering a simple object such as a glass of water and create a 3D model of a readily available found object. Autodesk offers a free Fusion 360 education license for eligible students and educators.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Participants will learn about measuring instruments, units (metric Vs. imperial), and how they are traditionally used for reverse engineering.

  2. Participants will create their own ruler, naming their own units and will use their improvised measuring tool to model an object that is available to them from the physical realm - at home.

  3. Participants will be introduced to the concept of parametric design, how it is used, the advantages of working with parameters in design.

  4. Participants will put parametric design into use in the process of creating their 3D reverse engineered models.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  1. Pen/Pencil, Letter size Paper, Scissors (not a must), and a Penny (1 cent, recommended but not required)

  2. Participants must have an existing Fusion 360 account that is not running on a “30-day trial.” Autodesk offers FREE license for eligible students and educators. Please visit this link: bit.ly/fusion-student-account

  3. Basic experience/understanding of CAD is recommended but not required (we are here to help get you started)

  4. Computer with Fusion 360 installed. Required computer specs for running Fusion 360 are available here: bit.ly/Fusion-360-requirements)
