In this program, we feature the works of four international masters: Edward Elgar (Britain), Benjamin Britten (Britain), Andreas Makris (Greece), and Claude Debussy (France). The repertoire includes Elgar’s lushly Romantic vocal work “Sea Pictures,” Britten’s haunting “Four Sea Interludes,” extracted from his opera Peter Grimes, Makris’ spirited “Hellenic Odyssey,” and Debussy’s justifiably celebrated “La Mer.” Composers have long been inspired by both the awesome majesty and serenity that the Seven Seas provide. Each selection captures multiple aspects of the most powerful natural phenomenon we regularly encounter, be it wild, tumultuous, tranquil, placid, terrifying or exhilarating. This is a magnificent cresting peak with which to close our subscription season.
