Unfinished Promise

Music, identity and the places we call home.

What does it mean for music to belong to a place?

Jessie Montgomery’s Banner and William Grant Still’s Darker America offer two strikingly different visions of the American experience, while Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture compresses an entire human drama into a few furious minutes.

Music has always carried the hopes, contradictions and unfinished stories of the people who create it. It can celebrate a nation while questioning it; reach toward an ideal while acknowledging how far there is still to go. Across different generations and different continents, these composers grapple with belonging—and with the complicated relationship between the world as it is and the world as we imagine it might become.

Then Dvořák takes us somewhere deeper. His Seventh Symphony was written by a composer wrestling with identity, history and the pull of his homeland—and the result is music of extraordinary urgency and humanity. Dark, defiant and ultimately soaring, it is Dvořák at his most powerful.
