Hello,

The Lafayette Trail, Inc. is pleased to announce that a new Lafayette Trail historic marker will soon be installed at Niagara Falls.

The site selected is located near Terrapin Point, on Goat Island, a few feet away from the main viewpoint of the Falls on the American side. We are so grateful to New York State Parks for allowing this project to move forward on their property. We also extend our most sincere thanks to the New York Daughters of the American Revolution for supporting this marker at the Falls.

The Falls enjoy a worldwide reputation because of the natural settings of the cataract. Millions of visitors visit the park every year. Very few, however, are aware of the Falls' connection with Lafayette. As a site of global significance, the immediate area surrounding the Falls is particularly protected and historic markers are generally not allowed near it.

With the exception of the statue of Nikola Tesla, our upcoming Lafayette Trail marker will be the only cultural monument on Goat Island and the only one honoring early American history.

We hope you will be able to join us on Thursday, May 20, 2021, at 2 pm EDT on Goat Island to dedicate this very special marker. We will gather by parking lot #2 on Goat Island (Charging Station Rd, Goat Island, Niagara Falls, NY 14303) and slowly make our way to the marker site, located within walking distance from the parking lot.

The Lafayette Trail has negotiated a very advantageous daily parking rate for confirmed attendees. You will see the $10 daily parking fee on Goat Island fully waived!!

To confirm your participation and/or learn more information about attending this VERY SPECIAL event, please RSVP by Monday, May 17th.

This discount applies only to members of The Lafayette Trail, Inc. and to members of the New York Daughters of the American Revolution.

Goat Island separates the American Falls from the Canadian Falls (also known as Horseshoe Falls). The Island is owned by New York State and managed by New York State Parks. No passports are required to travel to Goat Island. You might have heard that the Canadian border is currently closed. This is not of any concern since the dedication ceremony will unfold on American soil and will not involve traveling to Canada in any way shape or form.

The Top of the Falls restaurant, located in the immediate vicinity of the marker site, has agreed to let us use their deck in case of poor weather conditions. Refreshments will be provided onsite.

May 20 is also the day when Lafayette passed away in 1834. We hope that this marker will tell his story to a large number of visitors for generations to come!

Thank you. I hope to see you there!!

Best regards,

Julien P. Icher
