This online workshop is aimed at artists who draw, paint or otherwise depict politicians, actors, musicians, business leaders or other celebrities - and who may want to sell derivative art and prints based on that work.
We will explore how "right to publicity laws" work - and how artists can create work that will work within them. These laws protect celebrities from appropriation of their images. Yet artists want to assert their First Amendment and other rights. Balancing those requires some understanding of the laws and rights on both sides - and the workshop explains how to do this.
This workshop will be produced in partnership with Michigan State University's First Amendment Clinic.
