Praise for The Last Soviet Artist

“Striking. . . . Lomasko’s clear prose, beautifully translated by Bela Shayevich, is accompanied by eloquent portraits of the people she meets . . . A complex tapestry of life at the edges of a still crumbling empire. The power of Lomasko’s work exists in the marriage she makes between text and image. She observes, interacts and records, rarely passing judgement, and as a result the images she creates have the effect of a sucker punch.” —Times Literary Supplement

The Last Soviet Artist—which fuses political reportage, travels, memoir and artwork—is profoundly moving. . . . Graphic novels are the ideal response to authoritarian regimes.” —Financial Times

“Through reportage, symbolism, and lived experience, The Last Soviet Artist captures a society in transition—and in collapse. Lomasko’s latest work not only documents the end of an era, but asserts the enduring power of art to bear witness, even in exile.” —Moscow Times

The Last Soviet Artist is an urgent read for the incendiary times that we inhabit today, and a critical response to the aesthetic inertia of our times. Lomasko’s latest is a work that urges you to question your position.” —Asymptote

“A superb entry in graphic reportage.” —Condé Nast Traveler
