Join North Olympic Land Trust for a series of free community walks led by local experts that highlight the Elwha River and the amazing restoration done to support the watershed.
On September 21 at 9:00 am we will be taking a walk down to the beach at the mouth of the Elwha River with Dr. Ian Miller of Washington Sea Grant. Ian works with coastal communities and public agencies in Washington State to strengthen their ability to plan for and manage coastal hazards, including tsunamis, chronic erosion, coastal flooding and other hazards associated with climate change. He is an author on 16 publications focused on the Elwha dam removal. Together, we’ll explore the area newly reformed beach at the mouth of the river and learn about how the dam removal created it.
We will gather at the gate that leads to the mouth of the Elwha River at the end of Place Road. Participants should expect to walk 1-2 miles on uneven terrain.
Please bring a water bottle and anything that would keep you comfortable on a nature walk. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, some folks may find trekking poles useful.
