Information about Prism United:

Prism United hosts a peer support group for the LGBTQ youth ages 14 - 18. The support group is led by facilitators who submit to background checks, become certified mandated reporters, and undergo regular training to foster a safe, welcoming environment for participants. Each gathering is centered around an activity-based curriculum designed by the Prism executive directors and facilitators. At the request of the youth, Prism has built a library of LGBTQ young adult literature and has coordinated with the broader community to provide home-cooked food at support group gatherings. Prism collaborates with AIDS AL South and the Mobile Health Department to offer free educational presentations for support group participants. Occasionally, local LGBTQ professionals visit the support group to talk about their collegiate and vocational experiences and share useful information relating to their expertise. Prism also provides monthly event nights, like open mic nights, costume-karaoke parties, and game nights. In 2019, the organization is launching a support group for younger LGBTQ youth (10-13) and a support group for parents of LGBTQ youth. Because of the prevalence of LGBTQ victimization in the classroom, Prism is working with educators to craft LGBTQ sensitivity training for school faculty. As Prism receives further support and continues to develop, it intends to tackle the serious issue of homelessness that disproportionately impacts its target population.

Information about Rainbow Mobile:

In January of 2018, Rainbow Mobile started with a Facebook page and three community-building programs: LGBTQ Family Dinner, Geek Night and a Book Club. We also launched a website with LGBTQ affirming resources: doctors, therapists, and businesses. Rainbow Mobile now runs a virtual community center with several programs and events every month, including two Support Groups, Hiking Trips, Kayaking Trips, Drag Queen Story Hour, Professional Mixers and many more. We are also actively engaged in community outreach and visibility projects. With continued support, we hope to raise enough funds to have a physical LGBTQ Community Center. Our mission is to help the LGBTQ community in Southwest Alabama reach its full potential. We envision having a physical LGBTQ Community Center in Mobile that will help build a strong, healthy, vibrant community and be an agent of change in the world movement working toward the liberation and empowerment of all LGBTQ people. Some of the services we hope to include there are social services, mental health counseling, cultural programs, recreational activities, a library, computer room, educational programs, support groups, a movie theatre room, and a youth drop-in center.
