Deep in the Andean rainforests of Peru, some of the world’s most remarkable biodiversity is still waiting to be discovered—and much of what we already know remains poorly understood. Join Peruvian herpetologist and longtime Rainforest Partnership collaborator Pablo Venegas for a journey into some of Peru’s most remote and biodiverse rainforests. 

Through photographs and stories from his expeditions, Pablo will share what it takes to search for frogs, lizards, and snakes in these challenging landscapes—from long treks through steep and rugged terrain to the extraordinary moment when a species new to science is found. 

But expeditions are not only about discovering new species. They are also essential for finding and documenting rare and poorly known species, including some that may be facing a serious risk of extinction—species whose populations and natural history can be incredibly difficult to study when they live in remote and inaccessible forests.

The journey does not end in the rainforest. Back at the museum, field observations are combined with DNA analyses, detailed morphological studies, and comparisons with specimens and historical information preserved in scientific collections around the world. 

This process turns observations from remote forests into scientific knowledge about species’ distributions, populations, and natural history, providing the foundation for understanding their conservation needs and protecting the habitats they depend on.
