This survey course will introduce participants to the lived experiences of free and enslaved women through documents that illuminate a history that is rarely seen, heard, told, and remembered. Legislative petitions, freedom certificates, wills, inventories, letters, autobiography, historical fiction and speeches provide glimpses into the past. They are documentary pieces of evidence that will be mined for our discussion and reflection.
We will meet on Thursdays in March - March 5, 12, 19, and 26 - from 6:30-8 p.m. at Richmond Hill. Cost is $25 per session or $75 for all four sessions. A reduced (student) rate is also available for $15. All proceeds will go to support the rehabilitation project of the Dwelling of Enslaved Africans at Richmond Hill. You may also make a tax-deductible donation to that effort.
