Event Details

Each May we ask the community to help us collect gluten free and allergy-friendly food to stock our shelves at the Howard County Food Bank, our Emergency Food Pantry, and monthly client choice distribution with Columbia Community Care.  This year, our annual event will be our 3rd Annual People Powered Food Drive with an optional virtual food drive.  As always, your monetary donations will be used to purchase gluten free and allergy-friendly items for our clients.  When donating online, you will receive a tax-deductible donation receipt immediately.  Our clients appreciate your help. We commend you for your generosity in this unprecedented health and economic emergency!

Our mission - S.A.F.E. Food Pantry educates, inspires, and engages the community about the necessity for gluten free and allergy-friendly food and provides that safe food to those in need.  As an all-volunteer organization, S.A.F.E. distributes gluten free and allergy-friendly food to clients through its partnership with the Howard County Food Bank, our Emergency Food Pantry in Howard County, and Columbia Community Care.

Our impact - In Maryland, over 1 million individuals, including 53,000 in Howard County, deal with food allergies, celiac disease, and gluten sensitivity every day.[1] Gluten free and allergy-friendly food costs 2-4 times more than regular food. It is a rare find on food bank shelves causing clients to choose between going hungry or eating something that will aggravate their medical condition. S.A.F.E. is the only organization in Maryland making this food available to thousands of Food Bank and Emergency Food Pantry clients. As a result of COVID-19, we are seeing a three-fold increase in demand.

Don't feel comfortable making an online donation?  You can mail a check or money order to:  S.A.F.E. Food Pantry, 9770 Patuxent Woods Drive, Suite 316, Columbia, MD  21046.  Give us some extra time to process due to the current situation, but we will send you a donation receipt by mail (or email, if provided) for tax purposes.

[1] Food Allergy Awareness and Education (FARE) and Beyond Celiac report that over 16% of the US population (53 million) is affected by food allergies, celiac disease, and gluten sensitivity.
