wayOUT Los Angeles is proud to announce the first ever wayOUT Cookbook benefitting Youth Oasis!

About the Cookbook:

With recipes submitted from across the country, the first ever wayOUT Cookbook is here. The paperback book features 90 recipes in 136 pages spanning every meal category including Breakfast, Appetizers, Entrees, Desserts, Cocktails, and more! From celebrity chefs to local chapter members (and a special mezcal section by Ilegal Mezal!), our community came together to tell a story of love through the making and sharing of food.

Food represents a shared experience whether family or friend, neighbor or stranger. The community aspect of coming together, creating and enjoying food and drink is a tradition that all humans, regardless of race, economic status, gender, sexual orientation, language or culture, continue to pass along and celebrate. We spread our love through food, tell our history through recipes, connect through shared meals, and grow as people around the table.

Through our shared love of food and the sense of togetherness that food represents, we hope to further the wayOUT mission through this cookbook. At its core, wayOUT empowers LGBTQIA+ youth to feel safe being who they really are. Since its inception in 2016, we have raised over $650,000 for 6 different organizations across the country that provide life-saving resources for LGBTQIA+ youth. With chapters in the Bay Area, New York City, Los Angeles and Seattle, we continue to advocate and fight for these youths who don’t have a voice.

About wayOut Los Angeles:

wayOUT Los Angeles is proud to be serving our sophomore year as a local wayOUT chapter. With 12 volunteer chapter members from diverse backgrounds, we are committed to our values of:

  • Cultivating Joy
  • Inspiring Activism
  • Empowering Youth
  • Promoting Diversity
  • Equity & Inclusion
  • Celebrating Queerness
  • Fostering Community

After successfully raising over $81,000.00 last year for OUT Memphis, we are excited to begin fundraising for our 2020 partner, Youth Oasis. We chose Youth Oasis because of the incredible programs they offer at-risk youth transitioning from the foster care system into adulthood as well as their incredible focus on intersectionality. We are proud to raise awareness to their cause and thank you in advance for your help and contribution. We know that we cannot do this without your support!

About Youth Oasis:

Youth Oasis was founded as Baton Rouge Alliance for Transitional Living in 1998 by members of local social service agencies and universities who saw the need for a transitional living program for young adults aging out of foster care. In 2002, a basic emergency shelter was added to provide support to at-risk youth ages 10-17. The organization become known as Youth Oasis in 2003 and officially changed its name in 2011.

In 2016, the transitional living program was expanded to include services unique to the LGBTQ+ community and branded “Diversity House”. Today, Youth Oasis remains true to its foundation of breaking the cycle of homelessness in our community and state by operating the foster youth shelter, transitional living center, and Diversity House.

Youth Oasis' mission is to provide emergency and transitional housing, care, support and advocacy for vulnerable youth who have been pushed to the margins in the Baton Rouge area. Fully and proudly inclusive, we’re Louisiana’s first LGBT-affirming shelter for youth .
