Join the Western Flyer Foundation and Oregon Sea Grant for a free community lecture and film screening in Coos Bay, exploring the legacy of Ed Ricketts and the ongoing work of the historic vessel Western Flyer.

The program brings together science, history, and storytelling:

  • Craig Young (former Director, Oregon Institute of Marine Biology) presents on Ricketts, Steinbeck, and the aspirations of young marine scientists
  • Hosted by Jack Barth (Oregon State University), with remarks from Sherry Flumerfelt, Executive Director of the Western Flyer Foundation
  • Screening of We Simply Liked It, an award-winning short film captured during the Western Flyer’s 85th Anniversary return to the Gulf of California

Together, these stories connect past and present—highlighting how exploration and curiosity continue to shape our understanding of the ocean.

This event is offered free to the public thanks to generous support from Oregon Sea Grant.
